People in cities want to breathe clean air, be able to retreat into green oases, spend less time in traffic jams, and stay informed at all times. In short, they want to live and work in comfort. Cities are booming and the challenges are tough. Mobility, the environment, construction, housing and energy - these are all issues that cities and municipalities are tackling in their attempt to satisfy expectations.
Data - simple and accessible to all
Supporting them in this endeavor are solutions platforms that make new, intelligent services possible but which utilise existing data and necessary extensions. Such platforms for smart cities are accessible to all municipal departments, can be shared with other solution providers, and are always available - on tablet or smartphone, with one click. Data is no longer stored in isolation and restricted to certain individuals or departments. With better accessibility encouraging greater focus, cities become fit for the future.
Actively shaping change
“In the cities and municipalities, digitalisation meets people’s everyday lives”, says the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community (BMI), “the municipalities are therefore the ideal place to actively shape digital change”. At the beginning of April, the BMI announced the funding of smart city model projects to the tune of €750 million over ten years. A welcome move, but most cities still have a long way to go.
Indispensable cornerstones
Digital twins for infrastructure buildings, 3D city models, smart sensor technologies and UAVs will be indispensable cornerstones in realising smart cities of the future. At the world’s leading trade fair for geodesy, INTERGEO 2019 (17-19 September 2019, Stuttgart), conference keynotes will address the question: What contribution does the geospatial sector make to the city of the future?
Finding answers
In their response, keynote speakers such as Jürgen Dold, President Hexagon Geosystems, will look at the opportunities offered by digital business models. State Secretary Markus Kerber (BMI) will discuss the challenges and parameters of smart cities from a political point of view, while smart city expert Joachim Schonowski will take a critical look at the topic: “Smart city: hype, utopia, dystopia - where do we stand and where do we want to go?”. Are smart cities sufficient for a sustainable future? And how much technology do we need? Schonowski will address these and other pressing questions at INTERGEO.
Playing with an open hand
The German Cartography Conference, organised by the German Society for Cartography and Geoinformation, is an integral part of the INTERGEO CONFERENCE. This year’s slogan is “Playing with an open hand” and promises some exciting insights into the visualisation of our world of data. Around 680 companies, institutions and associations from more than 40 countries are showcasing their services and innovations for the geospatial industry at INTERGEO EXPO.
Currency of the future
Combining a cutting-edge Expo and Conference, INTERGEO celebrates its 25th anniversary as a platform for innovation from 17 to 19 September 2019 in Stuttgart. An emphasis on hot topics such as drones, smart cities, digital construction and digital mapping will demonstrate how geoinnovations are fast becoming the currency of the future.
Based on geoinformation and combined with new technologies, such innovations are making important contributions to digitalisation on many levels, from 3D visualization to civic participation, and from indoor and outdoor navigation to Artificial Intelligence. Such innovations, evolving over the past 25 years, are aimed at improving the quality of life for all and can be viewed as a currency for the world of tomorrow.
