“Digitalisation is undoubtedly one of the greatest challenges of the next twenty years,” says Professor Hansjörg Kutterer, President of the German Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy and keynote speaker at this year’s INTERGEO. The world’s largest conference and trade fair for the geoinformation sector that takes place from 16 to 18 October in Frankfurt am Main.
This year’s event is broadly dedicated to the importance of geoinformation and its contribution to the process of digitalisation. Geodata makes our reality available in a multi-dimensional, digital format – a tool that unlocks a whole range of applications. INTERGEO examines and demonstrates this process in practical areas of work.
Paving the way
The municipal sector, represented by Kommune 2.0 e.V. and the German Association of Cities, among others, will be discussing the many different approaches and solutions that could pave the way towards digital municipalities. Impressive examples include smart cities and, of course, Building Information Modelling (BIM) – another driving force behind digitalisation that is powered by geoinformation.
“We have increasing amounts of data and information. Drones and lasers are flooding us with point clouds and data. We need to get this mass of data under control. This is a key element in the BIM process,” explains Dr. Ilka May, CEO of LocLab Consulting, who will be exploring the subject in the INTERGEO forum.
New methods, processes and thinking
New methods of capturing data, sensors, Virtual and Augmented Reality, applications with state-of-the-art drones, and new methods and processes in geoinformation technology are further topics up for discussion by conference delegates attending from across the globe. A keynote speech by Professor Jürgen Döllner from the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam will look at how Artificial Intelligence is being applied to Virtual and Augmented Reality.
The increasingly important subjects of land development and property assessment will also be examined in terms of digitalisation. A key term in this context is “smart village” – in other words, sustainable living in rural areas.
One-to-one
Some 600 exhibitors from Germany and abroad are participating in a trade fair that covers the entire range of digitalisation processes and solutions. This includes specialist Smart City Solutions zones and Interaerial Solutions – Europe’s largest drone trade fair.
With its 17,000 visitors, INTERGEO 2018 will undoubtedly be this year’s best opportunity to discuss and develop insights, suggestions, best practices, solutions and innovative ideas. After all, one-to-one personal contact is irreplaceable, even in the digital era.
