Established in 1767, Survey of India is the principal mapping agency and the oldest scientific department of India. It spearheads various mapping and geospatial initiatives for the nation, and has worked in close association with numerous partners and multilateral agencies around the world.
This year, the agency is gearing up to showcase its rich history at the exhibition arena of the Geospatial World Forum. Here are some of the inventions you wouldn't want to miss out on:
- The 36 inch Great Theodolite - Manufactured by Troughton and Simms and valued at £650. It was used for the measurement of horizontal and vertical angles during the Great Trigonometrical Survey in 1866.
- The Sun Compass - a device that operates like a sundial. It indicates direction by employing the angle of the shadow cast by the Sun in conjunction with a compass card, a flat disk marked with points and degree of direction.
Block your calendar to pay tribute to the oldest scientific department of the Government of India and get ready to be dazzled by the rich history of surveying and mapping in the country.
