According to GfK’s latest retail study, the retail share of overall consumer expenditures among the EU-28 was 30.5% in 2018, a decline of 0.4% compared to the previous year. Some contributing factors to this decline include tight housing markets, increasing rental and real estate prices as well as the growing share of online retail in some countries. Brick-and-mortar retail enjoyed the highest share of overall consumer spending in 2018 in Hungary (50.3%), Croatia (47.6%) and Bulgaria (43.5%), while the lowest share was in Greece (25.4%), Germany (26.0%), and the United Kingdom (26.1%).
