OGC approves new Abstract Specification Topics concerning Coverages

By Eric Van Rees - 18th March 2025 - 07:51

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) announced that its Membership has approved two new Abstract Specification Topics: Topic 6.1 – Schema for Coverage Geometry and Functions – Part 1: Fundamentals and Topic 6.3 – Schema for Coverage Geometry and Functions – Part 3: Processing Fundamentals.

Editor of these specifications is Peter Baumann (editor of 23 standard specifications of OGC and ISO).

The following standards have recently been revised and adopted as official OGC Abstract Specification Topics:

ISO 19.123-1: This document defines the concepts and terminology for the coverage data model and has been incorporated into the OGC framework as Abstract Topic 6.1. More details can be found at: ISO 19.123-1.

ISO 19.123-3: This standard describes the concepts and terminology for the coverage processing model and has now been adopted as Abstract Topic 6.3. More information is available at: ISO 19.123-3.

In addition to these completed harmonizations, another standard is still under revision:

ISO 19.123-2: This standard consolidates the concepts and terminology for the Coverage Implementation Schema versions 1.0 and 1.1. The revision is based on the integration of relevant OGC standards and is expected to be completed soon.

Updating and standardizing these specifications is a significant milestone for geoinformatics and geospatial data processing. A consistent terminology and harmonized model enhance interoperability between different applications and systems, providing a unified foundation for geospatial data processing and usage. Peter Baumann, who played a leading role in these standardization processes, explains: "The consistent harmonization of these standards marks an important step toward global interoperability in geospatial data processing. This creates a robust foundation for future developments and innovative applications."
