NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS (USA) - The GISciences Program in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas will celebrate its annual GIS Day on November 14 and will showcase Maptitude mapping software and the UT Dallas geospatial information sciences (GIS) program at the event.

GIS Day, which is celebrated by GIS scholars and practitioners worldwide, was inaugurated in 1999. Event organizers across the globe consider GIS Day an ideal time to demonstrate the benefits of GIS, promote new opportunities in the field, and share information about GIS with the general public.

This year high school students will receive a hands-on sneak peek into the geospatial industry using Maptitude mapping software. The students will be introduced to a library of maps that show special Texas and Dallas themes and then will become a disease detective in Victorian London as they re-investigate John Snow’s seminal Soho, London, cholera data.

Caliper is excited to support the GIS Day event. "The ease-of-use, integration, and common GIS tools provided in Maptitude facilitate the adoption of GIS by a broader range of students," said Stewart Berry, vice president of product management, mapping software at Caliper. "Maptitude has proven to be an excellent tool for students studying GIS, business geography, location intelligence, and environmental issues. The software integrates well with other vendor products, and natively supports formats such as Shapefiles. This allows students to get up and running quickly with an integrated and commercial grade GIS while being able to use the software at school and at home for coursework and research."
