Karlsruhe/Sydney. 30 August 2018. The goal for intelligent transport management in Sydney is to predict 30 minutes into the future and act within five minutes. This will be delivered by the Intelligent Congestion Management Program (ICMP) valued more than 35 million euros. German technology of PTV Group won the benchmark with international competitors and will deliver state of the art real-time traffic estimation and prediction, high-speed computing and a reliable decision support system. The new setup will improve the Transport Management Centre by making faster, more informed decisions, automating current manual processes, making passenger journeys more reliable and reducing the cost of congestion. With the new multimillion project for PTV Group, the software provider can yet again prove its know-how in delivering intelligent mobility solutions – similarly like the successful implementations of traffic management systems in Vienna, Moscow, Abu Dhabi or Taiwan.
How to face big increase in population in fast growing cities? How can advanced transportation systems help to improve future urban life? These questions were answered in Sydney, which is one of fastest growing cities in the world. The Intelligent Congestion Management Program (ICMP) contract, valued at more than 35 million euros, is for a term of five years and seven months, with options for two three-year extensions. The program includes a contract with Cubic Transportation Systems to replace the current traffic management system, which was built for the Sydney Olympics 2000.
“The new system for Sydney will become one of the world’s largest real-time transportation management solutions. It has a task to detect, analyse and predict traffic states in order to resolve a lot of complex transportation issues. As strategic partner for the installation, configuration and testing of the predictive engine we are looking forward to supporting the region with this landmark project,” says Omid Ejtemai, Regional Managing Director, Asia-Pacific at PTV Group.
PTV is one of the key partners for this venture and will partake in providing and supporting a technology platform integrating the operational management systems for all modes of transportation in the Sydney area, coupled with the most up-to-date data, statistics and intelligence on transport operations. As part of this project the software PTV Optima will be implemented in the greater Sydney area in two phases over the next 24 months. Additionally, PTV Visum will be used as the comprehensive software solution for strategic traffic and transportation planning, in particular for infrastructure planning and operational analysis. It has full GIS functionality with multiple assignment methods available, including static and dynamic assignments.
About the cutting-edge project
Transport for New South Wales (NSW) recently announced that Sydney is developing one of the world’s most advanced transport management system. Andrew Constance, the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, stated that the new system will significantly improve Sydney’s Transport Management Centre.
“Technology is rapidly changing the way people move around Sydney, driverless Metro trains will start carrying customers next year and driverless cars are already being tested on NSW roads,” Mr Constance said. “This will future proof our transport management system for these innovations, so we can better manage congestion and respond to incidents faster, as well as preparing for new transport infrastructure in the pipeline.”
The objective of the system, which will be delivered in 2020, is to predict 30 minutes into the future and act within five minutes. The implementation of the system will allow to coordinate public transport and provide customers information about disruptions or alternative routes in real-time. Furthermore, operators will be pointed to where unusual conditions exist on the roads, allowing faster detection and clearance of incidents, thanks to automatically generated congestion alerts.
PTV Group will be showcasing its wide range of advanced mobility solutions at ITS World Congress (stand 090) in Copenhagen from 17 – 21 September.
