Approaches and solutions for tomorrow’s transport

Karlsruhe, Germany, 02/10/2017. In early October, international experts will meet at ETC in Barcelona to discuss a wide range of topics related to traffic and transport. PTV experts will be presenting several major projects and solutions: 2030 Federal Transport Plan, EU research project FLOW and TRIMODE, the multimodal transport model for Europe.

2030 Federal Transport Plan

On the first day of the conference (4 Oct), Prof. Dr. Christoph Walther, Dr.-Ing. Alexander Dahl and Dr.-Ing. Volker Waßmuth, PTV Group, will talk about the “Application of Cost Benefit Analysis” based on the methodology of the 2030 Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan (FTIP). Their contribution to the European discussion on project evaluation is part of Session 1. Important developments in the areas of “Reliability” and “Induced Traffic” will be outlined as part of an example project.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Walther, Head of Global Research at PTV, was involved in the development of the FTIP as specialized coordinator on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure over a period of six years. According to Christoph Walther, the FTIP provides a solid foundation for traffic development forecasts as it is based on well-justified assumptions concerning population growth and economic development. The FTIP can serve as a basis for the government’s mobility and fuel strategy, in which Christoph Walther is again involved in as one of its three coordinators.

Everything flows

Together with Pedro Homem de Gouveia, Camara Municipal de Lisboa, Prof. Dr. Christoph Walther and Nora Szabo of PTV Group will present their paper on “Congestion reduction by means of active transport modes”, taking the City of Lisbon as an example. Their presentation is part of Session 1 on “Modelling Transport“ held on 5 October. The EU research project FLOW (Furthering Less Congestion by Creating Opportunities for more Walking and Cycling) focuses on innovative concepts for the encouragement of pedestrian and bicycle traffic.

A congestion assessment methodology and tools were developed during the first project phase. In the second phase, the applications were adapted to the needs of the partner cities, i.e. pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The partner cities are Dublin, Gdynia, Lisbon, Munich, Budapest and Sofia. Other cities, consultants and decision-makers have also access to the applications, allowing them to evaluate the effects of pedestrian and bicycle traffic on the performance of their urban transport network.

TRIMODE – a multimodal transport model for Europe

On the third day of the conference, Dr. Klaus Nökel, PTV Group, and Davie Fiorello and Angelo Martino,TRT Trasporti E Territorio, will present TRIMODE during Session 1 focusing on “Big Models”. The TRIMODE project, whose goal is to develop a multimodal transport model that covers all freight and passenger movements across Europe, reached an important milestone this summer. PTV Group is a member of the TRIMODE consortium that completed the first project phase in late July by handing over the new model to the European Commission. Dr. Klaus Nökel and Arnd Vogel of PTV Group offered a training course that provided DG MOVE (European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport) experts with hands-on learning to make sure they are thoroughly familiar with the new model.
