More than 40 leaders in the hydropower sector in Africa will gather in Cape Town, South Africa between between the 21st and the 22nd of April in 2020, to discuss on the theme potential future prospects of hydropower for a sustainable Africa at the African Hydropower Forum (AHF) 2020.
Hydropower presents an opportunity for economic development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Hydropower potential exceeds current and medium term demand in the African region and, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the cost of electricity from hydropower projects remains the lowest among renewable energy sources globally.
Governments in Africa are putting in efforts to increase investment both in hydropower projects which will enable interconnection projects to have a transformative impact across African region. This is because hydropower development is considered a priority owing to its major role in buffering against fluctuations in production.
AHF 2020 brings together industry, government, finance and civil society to set priorities for the future of the hydropower sector. It is a flagship event and the essential forum for the African hydropower sector to share experiences, debate key issues, review improvements and consider future opportunities for the industry.
The forum will also bring together industry professionals in Africa (a continent with excellent infrastructure and a variety of dams) and beyond to discuss water and energy issues relevant to Africa. It will cover areas like civil works and challenging conditions, hydrology, and flood and drought management, hydro technology, environmental and social aspects, and much more.
The chairman of AHF 2020, Dr. Mohamed H. Saied, who is currently the General Manager, Electrical Engineering Dept. Abu Qir Fertilizers & Chemical Industries Co., Egypt, for over a decade has devoted his time to designing and delivering several electrical power and automatic control.
Asides Dr. Mohamed H. Saied, the forum assembles a great line up of speakers already confirmed including; Prerak Thekadi, General Manager - Techno Commercial and Civil Engineer, Adani Green Energy Limited, India; Anton-Louis Olivier, CEO, Renewable Energy Holdings (Pty) Ltd; Wim Jonker Klunne, Small hydropower expert / Civil Engineer, Hydro4Africa; Hugh Hawarden, Power and Renewables Transactor, Rand Merchant Bank; William Liabunya, Chief Executive Officer, The Electricity Generation Company Limited (EGENCO), Malawi; Charles Eberly, Power & Infrastructure - Global Head of Coverage, CrossBoundary; Karén Breytenbach, Head of the Department of Energy, IPP Office, Development Bank of Southern Africa; among many others.
