ABPmer to assist Tobermory Harbour Association

ABPmer, a recognised provider of port risk management services, has been contracted to help Tobermory Harbour Association undertake a comprehensive risk assessment of its marine operations.

Tobermory Harbour Association (THA), established in 1983, owns, manages and maintains a range of facilities within Tobermory Harbour on behalf of the community. THA is currently applying to become a Harbour Authority and as part of the process a number of systems and procedures will be developed to comply with the UK Port Marine Safety Code (PMSC).

The Port Marine Safety Code requires port and harbour authorities to operate a Marine Safety Management System which is founded on a formal risk assessment of marine operations.

Monty Smedley, Maritime Service Team Leader at ABPmer said, “We are delighted to be appointed at this exciting time in Tobermory Harbour Association’s history.

“ABPmer has extensive experience of working with port communities to undertake Marine Risk Assessments (also termed navigational risk assessments) for the purposes of evaluating and controlling hazards.

“We will help THA undertake PMSC compliant risk assessments of all their marine operations. This initial risk assessment will provide the starting point for their safety management system which will naturally evolve through continual assessment and when new hazards are identified.”

THA will also be taking advantage of ABPmer’s software ‘MarNIS Port Assessment Toolkit’ which provides a means of maintaining marine risk assessments and accident and incident reporting.

The company regularly helps assess risk to navigation, operations and the environment; develop safety management systems; and management control.
